Crystals by Colour: A Visual Guide for Shopping and Display
Start with the colour you actually like, then compare mineral identity, durability, treatment and traditional symbolism.
Shopping by colour is underrated. It is often more useful than choosing a crystal because a list told you what you “need”.
Purple
Amethyst and fluorite are common starting points. Amethyst is harder and generally more forgiving; fluorite offers dramatic cubes and zoning but is softer.
Pink
Rose quartz gives soft translucent pink. Rhodonite and rhodochrosite can produce stronger pinks with very different mineralogy and price.
Green
Fluorite, malachite, aventurine, prehnite and some tourmalines cover very different greens. Care requirements vary substantially.
Black
Black tourmaline, obsidian and smoky quartz can all look dark while belonging to entirely different material categories.
Clear and white
Clear quartz is durable and neutral; gypsum/selenite is much softer. Never infer care requirements from colour alone.
